My grandpa used to tell me, “Never buy a first-year model. Wait a year for them to get all the kinks out.” That was decent advice — back when a CRT television weighed as much as a Honda Civic. Today? Not so much.
Modern cars aren’t as prone to those unfortunate first-year yips. Prior to hitting a showroom floor, each model has been prodded and poked more times than a Thanksgiving turkey. In fact, most models accrue up to 5 million test miles before any regular Jack or Jill gets behind the wheel, let alone even sees the dang thing. So, it’s safe to say that buying a new-gen vehicle, like the 2022 Civic Hatch, is a kink-less endeavor.
Speaking of the Civic Hatch, did you know that a new 11th-generation model is filling out lots at your nearby Honda dealership later this year? Seems like the perfect opportunity to put Grandpa’s faulty albeit appreciated advice to the test. Let’s discuss why maybe, just maybe, you might want to wait for the new Civic Hatchback.
Even though many high-revving, lightweight cars have lost traction to compact SUVs and sedans with CVTs, we’re happy to report that there’s still a small Honda with a stick. Perfect for young, active drivers, the upcoming new Honda hatchback is available with a 6-speed manual transmission. Praise be!
Sporty European Appeal
Inspired by liftbacks and hatches living across the pond, the new 2022 Civic Hatchback features a sloping coupe-like profile that delivers a fresh and exhilarating treat for the retinas. Its low hood and mesh grille will make you bite your lip. The splendidly unique taillights draw in your gaze, while the high-mounted centralized stop lamp, which extends across ~90% of the hatch door, further emphasizes those stylistic Euro cues.
Compared to the 2021 Civic Hatch, the new hatchback from Honda gets 1.4 inches of additional wheelbase length, a half-inch wider rear track, and windshield pillars that are pushed back nearly 2 inches, ultimately improving visibility. Style and function — just what the doctor ordered.
While some may consider the 2022 Civic Hatchback to be more of a “liftback,” there’s no denying it’s full of hatchback utility. That big booty in the back offers 24.5 cubic feet of space, and thanks to its low lift-over height and a cargo opening that’s 1.6 inches wider than previous models’, this hatch is insanely versatile.
What? You care about passenger comfort, too? Well, in addition to having substantially more cargo volume than the sedan model, the Hatchback Civic 11th-gen model sees a 1.4-inch net increase in rear legroom compared to the 10th-gen version. All other interior volume specs for the 2022 hatch are mostly preserved.
A 2022 Civic Sedan in Hatchback Clothing
Above all else, the 2022 Hatchback Civic is essentially a fraternal twin of the critically acclaimed new Civic Sedan. Most features found in the hatchback are also in the sedan, including the following:
