On one end of the field, we have the 2017 Honda CR-V, a best-selling SUV whose finesse, power, and agility are unrivaled. On the other side is the 2017 Nissan Rogue, a middling compact crossover that hasn’t yet broken through to the upper echelons. If it’s true that cream always rises to the top, then the 2017 CR-V is the creamiest cream there is. (Well, you get the idea.)

2017 Nissan Rogue

Let’s run through all the ways the CR-V gets the better of its run-of-the-mill rival Rogue.

Premium Performance

The new CR-V is equipped with standard 2.4L 4-cylinder that makes 184hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. Step up into one of the higher trims, like the top-end Touring, and you’re met with a 1.5L turbo-4 that sings its 190-horsepower tune effortlessly—how does 28 city/34 highway MPGs sound?—alongside its choir co-chair, Honda’s amazing CVT. It can even tow up to 1,500 pounds, which destroys the Rogue’s 1,000-pound limit.

Pushing out just 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque is the Rogue’s lackluster 2.5-liter DOHC engine. It fits the SUV bill by posting 25 city/32 highway MPGs, but it’s certainly no match for the CR-V in the fuel-efficiency department.

Volume, Volume, Volume

With the CR-V, you can haul around 75.8 cubic feet of “stuff.” The best the Rogue can do is 70 cubic feet. That’s a difference of about 38 gallons of milk. Or a very large microwave. Or a suitcase packed with raw onions.

Perhaps cargo volume isn’t as important to you as passenger comfort. The CR-V beats the Rogue there, too, offering more legroom in the back (40.4 inches vs. 37.9) as well as extra shoulder and hip room in the front. Considering both SUV’s passenger volumes are nearly identical at just under 106 cubic feet, those dimensions are a testament to the CR-V’s thoughtfully constructed interior. It also helps that the CR-V’s cabin has soft-touch materials that flow from end to end.
