Looking to invest in a fuel-efficient, money-saving car like the Honda Clarity? We don’t blame you. A wallet-conscious car shopper in this day and age is also an environment-conscious shopper. They go hand in hand, and that’s probably for the best considering climate change has ramped up in recent years (2017 was the third-warmest year on record.)
But which Honda Clarity is right for you? With three Clarity models from which to choose, it can be difficult to know the answer to that question. But our First Coast Honda Dealers are here to make that decision easier. Here are the major differences between the Clarity cars.
2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid
Starting MSRP: $33,400
MPGe: 110 mpg (combined)
Range: 47 miles (electric)/340 miles (gas-electric)
Charge Time: 2.5 hours (Level 2)/12 hours (Level 1)
Unlike typical hybrid cars, the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) is equipped with a manually chargeable battery. Rather than relying on just the gas-powered engine to charge the battery as you’d do with a hybrid, the PHEV allows you to charge it at an EV charging station or in the comfort of your own garage or driveway.
In all-electric mode, the Clarity can travel up to a class-leading 47 miles, producing zero carbon emissions and greenhouse gases along the way. Its AC permanent-magnet electric motor produces a whopping 181 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of “instant torque,” meaning you get off the line…well, instantly.
When the 17-kWh battery is depleted, the gas engine in the Clarity PHEV—a 103-hp 4-cylinder that makes 99 lb.-ft. of torque—kicks in to provide a total driving range of 340 miles, while also charging the battery in “hybrid drive (HV)” mode.
Other major advantages over the other Clarity models (EV and Fuel Cell) include more cargo volume (15.5 cu. ft.), LED Daytime Running Lights
2018 Honda Clarity Electric
Starting MSRP: Lease Only
Range: 89 miles
Charge Time: 30 minutes (DC fast charger)/3.5 hours (Level 2)
Although the 2018 Clarity Electric car is only available as a lease in California and Oregon, future Clarity EV models are sure to expand into the southeast states, like Florida and Georgia, soon enough.
The biggest advantage of owning the Clarity Electric is its very capable 25.5-kWh battery. In just 30 minutes with a DC fast charger, you can power up the Clarity’s battery to 80%—the quickest charge time in the segment. With a Level 2 charger, you can get from 0% to 100% in only 3.5 hours. You can even schedule your Clarity Electric to charge at specific times, taking full advantage of your electric utility company’s off-peak hours, if available.
2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell
Starting MSRP: Lease Only
MPGe: 68 mpg (combined)
Range: 366 miles
Charge Time: 5 minutes (hydrogen station)
Being perhaps the most impressive feat of automotive engineering, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell has made hydrogen-powered cars affordable for the masses—at least in California. (It’s unfortunately limited to customers in west coast because of limitations on hydrogen fueling stations.)
The Clarity Fuel Cell is fitted with a lightweight, 114-pound fuel cell powertrain. Located underneath the hood, the innovative cell allows the cabin to realistically accommodate up to 5 passengers, which is a rarity amongst rival fuel cell cars. Nearly 80% of the cabin is made from recyclable materials, as well, keeping up with Honda’s commitment to our environment.
The class-leading 366-mile range makes it the clear choice for anyone looking to drive into the future. Oddly enough, the Clarity Fuel Cell is also one rambunctious alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) thanks to a powerful 174-horsepower engine that makes 221 lb.-ft. of instant torque off the line.
