The 2016 Honda Civic is the epitome of the compact car segment. It has been a scrappy front-runner for years that, even in the face of stiff competition due to rising gas prices in the later part of the last decade, stayed on top of the segment. And what a competitive segment it is.
The Honda Civic comes in two unique flavors, sedan and coupe. The two-door version may seem like a bit of a shocker to some, but the coupe harkens back to the Civic’s sporty compact past.
Even the Ford Focus comes in two body styles but eschews a two-door for a more practical and less compelling five-door hatchback. Honda’s sporty roots are evident in its pursuit of fun.

Like the number of body styles it is available in, the 2016 Civic comes with one of two engines. Both are comprised of four cylinders though one measures 2.0 liters while the other is just 1.5 liters. However, the 1.5-liter mill has some extra kick thanks to a turbocharger.
The Civic’s 2.0-liter engine makes 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission. The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine makes a heart-pounding 174 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque.
Under the hood of the Focus sits one lonely engine, a 2.0-liter engine making 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. Power is also sent to the front wheels, but either this time through a five-speed row-your-own or a six-speed automated manual transmission.

The main market for the segment is young people fresh out of college or fresh into their first real adult jobs. What young people like to have is a choice, and giving them the option of coupe or sedan is better than a coupe or hatchback decision. Coupes are just much more fun and sporty.
The choices in engines are also a nice option to give possible consumers. The peppiness of the 1.5-liter mill will attract those looking for both performance and fuel efficiency. Overall, the Civic can return up to 31 miles per gallon in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The 2015 Ford Focus can get up to 26 miles per gallon city or 36 mpg highway.
Give us more power, take away two doors and you have yourself the perfect young-adult driving machine.
Tick All The Boxes
The joys of the Honda Civic is that no matter what trim you opt to get, you can spruce it up to its max with safety features and infotainment technologies. LED headlights and every safety feature you could want are available. Standard is a 4-speaker, 160-watt sound system as standard. A step up from that is an 8-speaker system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible. The top-of-the-line audio system has 10 speakers and pumps 450 watts.
A 2016 Ford Focus comes with 4 speakers as standard with an optional 7-speaker system. Audiophiles need not apply.

Winning All The Awards
The 2016 Honda Civic has recently been named the 2016 North American Car of the Year. Cars are selected for being the most improved over their predecessor. The NACOTY award is just the latest in a long list of awards the car has won since it was introduced last year.
From concept to production, Honda has focused on styling, material quality and a fun-to-drive quality it has not focused on in previous iterations of the compact car.
Looking at the Ford Focus and Honda Civic, the two take completely different design paths for 2016. The Focus is sedated, boring almost in execution, wearing the automaker’s corporate face so it falls in line with the rest of Ford’s offerings.
The Civic is different. It bucks conventional styling trends and goes bold. It is noticeable. Different from the rest of the cars in the segment and draws attention not because it is weird, but because it stands out with confidence. The 2016 Civic is just a bold reminder the compact car segment can have pizzazz. And that Pizzazz can lead to more than a few rewards.
What He Said
Sweet-handling and fun to drive, the Civic deserves serious consideration from enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike.” – Car and Driver
“In addition to more power, the tenth-generation Civic gets an all-new chassis with more ultra-high-strength steel that gives it more torsional rigidity than the outgoing car. “ Motor Trend
The limiting factor here isn’t so much the engine output as the car’s economy-minded gearing. The result is sluggish top-gear performance [with the Focus].” – Car and Driver
Taking One Home
The Civic trumps the Focus due to its effective powertrains; superb handling and styling that does not make one feel he or she is sacrificing styling for a low price. Too often, the compact car segment is seen as a place where car enthusiasm goes to die, but the turbocharged Civic mill fights back against that notion. And because of that, it makes our top list.
